Yoga, if practiced regularly, can be a great source of physical and emotional sustenance to help us deal and cope with daily stress. Yoga is one of the most ancient cultural heritage of India. The word “Yoga” comes from Sanskrit word “yuj” which means “to unite or integrate.” This implies joining or integrating all aspects of the individual – body with mind and mind with soul – to achieve a happy, balanced and useful life, and spiritually, uniting the individual with the supreme. Yoga is a 5000 year old Indian body of knowledge. Yoga is all about harmonizing the body with the mind and breath through the means of various breathing techniques, yoga postures (asanas) and meditation.
There are many different modern approached to yoga today, but the most commonly used is the traditional Hatha yoga. Ha pertains to the sun and tha means moon.
In yoga, Ha refers to the solar plexus, which is the core area of the body. Tha is associated with the emotions, found at the lumbic region of the brain. Through the breathing exercises and the postures of yoga, we strengthen the solar plexus of our body and balance our emotions. These stretches synchronized with breathing exercises boosts the internal organs to work properly. Furthermore, yoga also addresses the emotional health of an individual, making him or her more calm, peaceful and tolerant.
There are still a lot of misconceptions about Yoga, for instance, Yoga being a religion. Yes, in yoga contains philosophical concepts that can help solve serious problems for example with health. In fact, Yoga is being practiced by a lot of people from different religions like Christians, Jewish, Buddhists, and Muslims. You can start small, gradually mastering the ancient practice to their advantage.
Another misconception is that Yoga is an exercise, a way for us to keep fit. It is partly true, but if you think that Yoga is just that then you are greatly mistaken. Yoga develops the body since a weak one is a hindrance to spiritual growth. It does not simply focus on the physical but on the mental and spiritual aspects as well.
What Yoga Really Is
Yoga is an all-embracing way of life, a science of self-culture and mental discipline that ensures the purgation of the ignoble in man and brings forth what is most noble in him. It is pertinent to all people irrespective of his caste, creed, sex, and religion. It can be beneficial to all:
- the good and the bad
- the sick and the healthy
- the believer and the non-believer
- the literate and the ignorant
- the young and the old.
A person may begin at any age and can go on reaping its benefits.
